Getting married? Having a baby? Purchasing a new car? These are all things you tell your family and friends about, and probably even post on Facebook. But do you call your insurance agent? It’s important to stay in touch with your insurance agent about life changes or major purchases to make sure we include them in your insurance policies. Sometimes these changes can save you money (yeah!), but if you don’t keep your agent up-to-date you run the risk of having a claim denied by your insurance company.
Here are some common reasons to contact your insurance agent about updating your policies.
Major life events
- Marriage: combining households requires changes to policies and beneficiaries; also a good time to consider life insurance if you don’t have a policy.
- Divorce: also requires updating policies and beneficiaries.
- Kids: life insurance for both you and your child is important; also need to update beneficiaries.
- Moving: not only do we need your new address, but a new home may require a new policy – especially if you’ve moved out-of-state.
- New job with change in salary: may need to increase the amount of your life insurance policy.
- Starting a business: includes home businesses (even selling products like Mary Kay or Tupperware) as well as service businesses, such as car or home repair.
- Teen driver: we’ll help you find the best coverage at the best price.
- Death of spouse or children: we can help walk you though submitting paperwork and updating policies and beneficiaries.
- Empty nesters or adult children returning to the nest: we’ll review your policies to determine what changes need to be made.
- Retirement: we’ll update any policies as needed to reflect your new lifestyle.
Purchases
- New home or vacation home: includes new apartment and getting rental insurance.
- Vehicles: new car, motorcycle, RV, boat, etc.
- Land purchase
- Farm animals: beef cow, horse, pig, etc.
- New dog: some dog breeds require a separate rider on your homeowner’s insurance.
- Expensive items: most insurance policies have a dollar limit on replacing personal belongings (jewelry, electronics, computer, etc.)
Renovations
- Remodeling your home
- Installing a pool or hot tub
- Adding outdoor “toys:” swing set, trampoline, etc.
