Not many companies can say they’ve been in business for over 100 years – let alone have been owned by the same family. That’s the case for Meyer Insurance in Sauk City, WI. Since 1919, Meyer Insurance has served the Sauk Prairie area – providing home, auto, business, farm and life insurance solutions.
Current owners, Dan and Lise Meyer-Kobussen, are the third generation of the Meyer family to own the agency. It was started in 1919 by Lise’s grandfather, Rolf Meyer, after he returned from World War I. Lise’s parents, Paul and Barbara Meyer, bought the agency in 1956 after Rolf’s sudden passing. In 1999, when Lise’s parents retired, she began managing the agency and purchased it, with her husband, Dan, in 2004.
Although she can’t imagine herself any other place now, Lise wasn’t always interested in being a part of the family business. After graduating from UW LaCrosse, she spent time as an assistant manager of a jewelry store, selling specialty foods to fine restaurants, and a sales manger on a Christian mission relief ship that sailed around the world. After being away from Sauk Prairie for more than 10 years, Lise made her way home and began to appreciate the area where she grew up.
In 1994, Lise’s dad had heart surgery and was thinking about retirement. This made Lise evaluate her place in the family business. After learning more about the insurance industry and its potential, she jumped in and hasn’t looked back. Lise, along with her husband Dan, takes the Meyer family legacy very seriously – putting their heart and soul into the business.
Today, Meyer Insurance is building on the successful foundation created by Lise’s parents and grandparents. The agency has five employees and serves a number of individual and business clients. Lise and Dan are also continuing the agency’s legacy of giving back to the community. They are proud to support many local groups and charities.
